Five years ago, we renovated our vintage 1941 home. It was a huge project where we tore down our old garage and rebuilt it with a master suite above it.
Sounds amazing, right?
Except for one thing, or maybe two things.
I was in the throws of raising toddlers. My daughter was a year old, still nursing like a champ, and my son was a little over two-years-old. I was running on fumes and no sleep.
Whenever our general contractor would ask me to make design decisions, I always felt lost and confused. I didn’t have the head space to think. Moreover, I had a difficult time picking finishes that would be timeless, fun, yet go with the vibe of our house.
I never even thought of hiring an interior designer because they are expensive. Yet, as an artist and art teacher, colors, textures, patterns, and space were supposed to be my thing. Not in this case!
I was overwhelmed!
That’s when I created a group on Facebook, called Design Family. It’s a creative community committed to helping others design beautiful functional spaces for their families. Many members of my group felt like me, overwhelmed and stuck.
Here’s what some members have said:
I don’t have a cohesive style, so I feel like I’m constantly guessing. I’d like to feel confident in what I’m doing.
I’m constantly guessing what works!
I want a calm and stylish home.
Does this sound like you?
I’ve paired up with my friends at Interact to create this fun interior design quiz just for you. Learning what design styles and elements you are drawn to are the first steps to creating a calm harmonious home. You can try it here:

Five years later, we are still tweaking our design style. I’m always editing, growing, and making sure our home is warm, cozy and includes how we function as a family. Most of all, it’s super fun to share my design wins and challenges with my Design Family community on Facebook.
