Have you wondered how to achieve bright and shiny dyed Easter eggs? While it’s super convenient to buy the pre-made Easter egg decorating kits, it is definitely more fun to try color experiments with good old fashioned food dye. My kids love using the kitchen as their laboratory where they can feel free to test and create various colors. In the meantime, I have the best secret recipe to create really vibrant design and colors on your eggs. I know you will have all of the ingredients in your kitchen cabinets
Bright & Shiny Dyed Easter Egg Ingredients
- 1 dozen eggs
- oil pastels
- Mc Cormick’s food coloring or food gel coloring
- 1/2 TBS white vinegar
- 1 cup hot water
- clear plastic cups
- olive oil
Step 1
Place the eggs in a large pot and fill with cold water. Turn on the heat and once water has boiled turn off. Cover eggs and let them sit for 12-15 minutes. Strain, and then rinse in cold water.
Step 2
Use oil pastels to create a “resist.” Draw fun and interesting patterns on the eggs. I love using oil crayons instead of regular crayons, because the designs and patterns are much more vibrant.

Step 3
Decide how many colors you would like to make. I like to use clear plastic cups because it’s fun to see the colors mix. Fill each cup with 1/2 TBS white vinegar and 1 cup of hot water. Then mix some cool colors using Mc Cormick’s color guide
Orange Sunset = 17 yellow + 3 red
Rasberry = 14 red + 6 blue
Purple = 15 blue + 5 red
Jungle Green = 14 green + 6 yellow
Watermelon Red= 25 red + 5 blue
Teal = 15 green + 5 blue
Step 4
Now for my little secret! Take a paper towel with a dash of olive oil and gently polish the eggs. Don’t rub the eggs too hard because the oil pastels will rub off. The olive oil give the eggs a really beautiful sheen and luster.
What are your favorite egg dying techniques? I’d love to hear!

So pretty.
We are going to have to try the oil pastels too now we’ve always used crayons. I imagine it would work just as well with the Kool aid dye?
Thanks so much! I’m sure Kool aid dye will work just as well. The olive oil trick really makes the eggs pop too. Let me know how your eggs turn out.
These are so cute and look so fun to make!!!
Thanks so much Toyin!
