Fall is such a beautiful time of year, and I feel so blessed to live in a wooded community where I can enjoy all the lovely changes of the season. With all the various maple trees and oak trees in the Midwest, the month of October is just a visual explosion of amazing colors. From deep reds to bright yellows, there are so many opportunities to create art from nature. So when my daughter’s Montessori teacher asked me to partner in their Fall Leaf Sun Catcher art project. I jumped at the chance to volunteer.
We decided to create Fall Sun Catchers made with leaves, clear Con-Tact paper and an embroidery hoop. The results were just stunning!

Materials
- dried and pressed leaves
- chalk markers
- 6″ embroidery hoop
- clear Con-Tact paper
- Fall notions such as glitter, sequence, or confetti (optional)
- Fall themed ribbon or string
Process
step 1
Have your child take a dried, pressed leaf and draw any patterns, shapes, or colors on the leaf with chalk markers.
step 2
Precut two 8″ circles of clear Con-Tact paper. Take off the backing of one circle and leave sticky side up. Place one end of the embroidery hoop on the sticky side of the Con-Tact paper. (This is just a temporary place holder so your child doesn’t place items too close to the edge of the Con-Tact paper). Then have your child place their leaf inside the circle.
step 3
Your child can then place any fun fall notions like glitter, sequence leaves, tiny pieces of confetti, etc.. around the leaf.
step 4
Take off the one end of the embroidery hoop. (Remember it was the place holder). Add the second piece of Con-Tact paper. Place the finished product in the embroidery hoop, tighten, and then cut any remaining edges of Con-Tact paper. Use any pretty fall ribbon or string to hang in your window.
Product
These fall leaf sun catchers look amazing either grouped together or hung individually in a window. My daughter’s classroom window looks even more stunning against the wooded back drop.
This is one of those great art pieces that you will want to hang in your window every fall!
